Software Bug Severity Levels. The severity of a bug report reflects the impact of that particular issue on the software under testing. DEFECT SEVERITY also known as Bug Severity is a classification of software defect bug to indicate the degree of negative impact on the quality of software.
A Quality Assurance engineer usually determines the severity level of a bugdefect. As Software testers we raise many defects depending upon the nature of the project but which defect is impacting the system on high level and should be resolved first is decided by Priority and Severity. An issue that prevents that or that causes a potential safety hazard will be assigned the highest severity level.
It indicates the level of threat that a bug can affect the system.
Logged defects are characterized by several attributes. Hence when it comes to bugs the severity of a bug would indicate the effect it has on the system in terms of its impact. Severity and priority of defect in software testing are the two things we need to pick once the bug is found. The levels assigned to severity are critical major moderate minor and cosmetic.
